Everything is Close in Europe

We braved the cold (11 degrees) on Sunday and went to breakfast, the Main Market Square, Church of St. Mary, and a small city museum.

Today we heard English accents every where on the Main Square.  There were British pubs on one side of the square featuring English breakfasts and other things British.  Contingents of British young men many in only sweat shirts and jeans braving the cold–must be rugby players.  We talked with one couple from England and Krakow is a destination for a long weekend for many from the British Isles.  As they commented:  Everything in Europe is close.

There was a restaurant with tables set up outside with heaters.  We had just eaten breakfast around the corner–wish we had ventured on to the square before breakfast.

Quote from an exhibit at the museum:

I started to wander around the town, inhaling the Polish atmosphere, this ancient spirit wafting up from the stones, the houses, the towers, and for an hour I rejected every single thought that could disturb the sheer bliss of breathing in this city of the spirit, the centre of Polishness.

Stelian Zermski Dziennike diary July 1889

Viewing all the horses with their plumes and the carriages, I felt like Cinderella only not in a ball gown but instead: long underwear.

Atmosphere is everything.
